All afternoon the Girl-o and I attended this annual fall fair as a solo daughter-daddy duo. Mrs. DM begged off this hotly anticipated event because of the need of further convalescence, so the two of us set out alone into Darkest Parenting Territory…an event with no flush toilets.
In the nearly six hours the two of us were there we went on umpteen mechanical rides, including the Girl-o’s dream ride, her legendary Ferris Wheel.
The Girl-o also petted umpteen farm animals, grudgingly washed her hands upmpteen times afterwards, and announced in a loud voice during the heifer judging competition that she wanted to be 1) a Farmer and 2) a Cow-girl when she grows up. She endeared herself so much to several teenaged girls and boys who were part of the Heifer demonstration, and one girl even helped her lead a young cow about with a halter. The latter seriously encouraged me to have her to join 4H when she is older and even gave us some pamphlets.
My almost 4-year old also had fun with face-painting, got to hold a bunny and a duckling, had TWO Pogos (corn-dogs for you heathens living outside of Canada) along with fries and cotton candy, marveled at a fire-eater performing (and recognized him from last June’s Buskerfest in Dundas), won a stuffed clown-fish and a dolphin and had yet another pony ride complete with photo. She fell asleep in the car by the time I came home at 6:30.
The two of us also saw a good many of our friends at the fair. At least three folks from our D&D group were there, including
velvetpage and
pyat (the two with their own two little ones) and Daniel (the latter manning the Green Party booth solo at the Fair). There was also a colleague’s personal secretary who saw us, and a little girl and mother who attends both pre-school and T-ball with the Girl-O.

P.S. In other news, I survived my big talk on The Dementia Code; it was extremely well received and with few glitches. Next time I’ll test the LCD projector and make sure it’s brighter than the one they have. I’ll also get someone else to set up the MP3 recorder, as with all the other gizmos I had to juggle (wireless microphone, wireless mouse, laser pointer) it seemed after it setting it up it wasn’t turned on properly.
Mrs. DM is also feeling a little better, this after finally bending on Thursday night to see the on-call Family MD, and getting diagnosed with bacterial bronchitis. She felt immeasurably better after a single dose of Zithromax, but was still too enervated to attend the Fair today, and was appreciative at the hiatus in care-giving today.
